About Togliatti


Togliatti – the second for the significance and size city in the Samara region of the Russian Federation. Till 1964 the city carried the name "Stavropol - on - Volga", and now is an administrative center of the Stavropol region in the Samara Oblast. Tolyatti – the largest city of Russia among the cities which are not the center of the subject of the Russian Federation (oblast, region). Togliatti celebrates its birthday on the first Sunday of June – this day all citizens celebrate The City Day.
The most famous people associated with Togliatti are historian and founder of the city Vasily Tatischev, artist Ilya Repin, the Olympic champion-gymnast Alexey Nemov.
In 2009 Tolyatti is the eighteenth city of Russia in population.
Administrative devision of the city includes four districts (Avtozavodsky, Tsentralny, Komsomolsky, Shlyuzovoy). The largest district of Tolyatti and the Volga region is the Avtozavodsky district – here live nearly 450 thousand dwellers.

Togliatti has five sister cities: Wolfsburg (Germany), Kazanlik (Bulgaria), Loyang (China), Mingechaur (Azerbaijan), Flint (USA), and also two partner cities – Colmar (France) and Nadkanizha (Hungary).   Memorial complex in honor of the city builders

The memorial complex to «The city Creators» is located on the Central square of Togloatti. It consists of the sculpture to St. Nikolay Ugodnik and belfries near it.

The monument devoted to all founders of the Togliatti city was opened on November 5, 2004. The author is the honoured artist of RSFSR, sculptor A.I.Rukavishnikov.

  Monument to V. N. Tatischev

The monument to V. N. Tatischev, the founder of the city of Tolyatti, is established in Togliatti on the Volga bank on September 2, 1998. Vasily Nikitich Tatischev (1686 — 1750) — the Russian historian and the statesman. The monument is constructed in the form of a tiny fortress of a Petrovsky era —masonry walls with polygonal towers acting forward. In the center there is a majestic stone statue on the huge pedestal. Rukavishnikov says that during the work some changes were made with sculpture composition. It was initially supposed that the horseback rider should direct a hand towards the flooded Stavropol, but it was decided that it would be better to depict a neutral gesture towards Togliatti.

  Spaso-Preobrazhensky cathedral

The Spaso-Preobrazhensky cathedral — Togliatti’s orthodox cathedral in Togliatti, named after the Christian feast of the Transfiguration, which is celebrated on August 19.

In July, 2006 one of the most important shrines of the Christendom - St. John Krestitel's right hand - was delivered to the Cathedral. The built-up area of the cathedral is 2800 m ². The capacity шы more than 3,000 people. The height on the main cross шы 62 meters. The Cathedral includes the main altar in honor of the Transfiguration, the southern and northern altars, choirs, western porch, north and south porches and basement.


The height of the central iconostasis at altars — 15 meters. Floors are laid out in a mosaic of twelve types of marble. By the opening of the Cathedral jewelers from Togliatti produced 16 icons on enamel in silver settings. Interior and exterior doors - oak, with carving, brass fittings and grates.

The domes are covered with stainless steel "in gold". The crosses are made of the same material. The central dome weighs 26 tons, and it was installed by means of the special elevating crane which in itself became a unique construction operation. Inside the temple is lit with thirteen church chandeliers, the biggest of which has seven circles and height of about ten meters. The building is very modern from the engineering point of view: the temple is equipped with broadcasting, ventilation system, fire and security alarm systems, other communications, and also the device of external illumination of the façade.


  Sports-Technical Complex named after Anatoly Stepanov

The Sports-Technical Complex named after Anatoly Stepanov was built in 1963 and called "Stroitel”. Since 1967 it is a house track of the Zhiguli team (now "Mega-Lada"). In 2010 the name "Sports and technical complex named after Anatoly Stepanov" in honor of the lost president of Mega-Lada club was appropriated to the stadium. Track’s lanes are covered with a layer of granite chips of 30 cm. The total length of the track is 353 meters, width of lines - 11 meters, turns - 16 meters, which allows you to safely put in the race only four racers. The internal radius of turn makes 31 meters, external — 42 meters.


In the center of a track a special track for children is placed, its length is 130 meters and it’s unique for Russia. The nominal capacity of the stadium after reconstruction is 15,000 visitors. At the renovated bleachers plastic chairs are installed. There are deluxe room and a VIP-tribune. The sports-technical complex with 28 closed boxes, gym, changing rooms, showers, and workshops to prepare for the laps is built on the Stadium territory.


  Volgar Sports Place

Volgar Sports Place is a sport complex located in Avtozavodsky district of Togliatti near the Volga. It was designed by Yuriy Ivanovich Karpukhin in 1968-1969.

The Sports Place is divided into two parts: southern and northern. The small arena, game and sport halls are located in the southern part. There is the concert hall for 5000 seats, which can be transformed to the hockey arena for 2900 seats, in the northern part. It is the home arena of the ice hockey club Lada (Togliatti).

  Public Joint-Stock AvtoVAZ

Public Joint-Stock AvtoVAZ is the Russian vehicle producer, the largest car manufacturer in Russia and Eastern Europe. The company is the main leader of selling for home market as well as in the countries of CIS. The principle office and basic production are located in Togliatti, Samarskaya oblast (Samara region).

Public Joint-Stock AvtoVAZ is the major enterprise in the city of Togliatti and the main source of income in the budget.


AvtoVAZ is the largest vehicle manufacturer in Russia, which is actively working in 46 countries. The companies involved in AvtoVAZ Group are working in more than 17 countries; about 270 subsidiary companies are formed by this Group. The Group companies enterprise in such spheres as telecommunications, energy sector, construction and also provide financial and insurance services. The complete brand name of emitter is Public Joint-Stock Company AVTOVAZ. The preceding name was Volzhsky Avtomobilny Zavod (VAZ) (1966-1971). Previously the plant manufactured VAZ branded cars named as Zhiguli, Niva, Sputnik, Samara, Oka. At present the plant is producing cars under Lada trade mark. In addition AvtoVAZ manufactures components and spare parts for the models which are taken out of production or they are produced in other Russian cities and foreign cities. Nowadays the cars are assembled after AvtoVAZ license in Russia, the Ukraine, Ecuador, Egypt and Uruguay. The process of assembly is realized on five production lines. Every produced car passes testing on the car-track which consists of two ring routes and separate areas with test covering.


  Monument of Devotion

During several years one of the main Togliatti sights except AvtoVAZ is an inconspicuous dog monument in outskirts of Avtozavodsky district. The monument of Devotion was set up in Togliatti to a German shepherd dog, which had been waiting for its owners, who died in a car accident, for seven years. The dog’s devoted and loving soul did not believe that the owners, for whom it was desperately waiting, would never come back.

First the dog was noticed at 1995. People gave it the name of Konstantin (constant, faithful). From the day of tragedy for 7 years in heat or cold weather, the dog always guarded the last adobe of its owners.


The story of this dog was published many times across all Russia. In 2003 on the City Day of Togliatti the bronze monument was set up. The sculpture one and half meter height was placed on granite pedestal to create the impression that the dog turns its head following the cars passing through Yuzhnoe Shosse.

The monument of faithful Dog is one of city symbols.


  Togliatti Arts Museum

Togliatti Arts Museum is the only professional Arts Museum in the city. Nowadays the museum funds keep over 8000 works of art, graphic arts, sculptures and ornamental applied arts. Most of them were created in the second half of XX century. The basis of collection is paintings and graphic works, given by exhibition management of the USSR Artist Union and by Republican Center of art exhibition and popularization of Culture Ministery of Russian Federation. Thanks to that the works of E.A. Aslamazyan, L.I. Tabenkina, D.A. Nalbandyana, N.N. Brandta, M.K. Kantora, M.P. Konchaloskiy were added to the TAM (Togliatti Arts Museum) collection. The graphical collection keeps sketchings of S. M. Nikireyev, autolithographies of E. B. Bernshteyn, illustrations of M.M. Mechev to the “Primary Chronicle”, 50 works of Chinese graphic artists gifted by Luoyang house of artists.

  Technical Museum of AvtoVAZ

Technical Museum of AvtoVAZ is a unique museum in Russia in terms of the occupied territory and variety of exhibits. Nowadays the complex occupies 38 hectares and displays over 460 exhibits. It is one of the largest museums of this kind in Russia.

The patterns of weapons from the I and II World Wars are collected here. You can also see the bastion cannon, 122 mm howitzers, the model of 1910/1930, tanks T-34-85, IS-3, T-70 and Czech tank «PzKpfw 38t» «Prague», that fought on the German side, the legendary jet-system of volley fire BM-13 «Katusha», the self-propelled artillery mounting ISU-152, Swedish anti-aircraft gun «Bosporus».


The biggest exhibit is certainly the diesel submarine B-307 which is 91m long, 14m height and 2000 t heavy. The submarine was constructed in Gorky shipyard in 1979. The RF Navy was armed with 18 submarines of that kind. B-307 is the largest diesel submarine in the Navy of Russian Federation.

The up-to-date pilot exhibits are also presented here: the helicopter MI-24, distantly flying device "Pchela-1ТМ", 152 mm self-propelled howitzer "Akaziya" 2SZМ, self-propelled cannons 2C5 "Giazint" and 2С7 "Pion", tank T-80U, the self-propelled anti-aircraft mounting "Shilka", planes MiG-29 and MiG-31, battle machines of landing detachments, etc.

In 2004 the highest exhibit (24m) was added to the collection. It is an air defense missile system of medium-range S-300, which consist of low altitude detection radar and target illumination.

This Museum has a great collection of technological facilities, that our country can be proud of.


  Drama Theater Koleso

Gleb Borisovich Drozdov’s Drama Theater Koleso was founded in 1988 as State experimental Theater Koleso of Togliatti.

During 19 years of work 108 performances were staged in the Theater. Annually Koleso shows five or six first-nights. The average attendance of performance is 87% that exceed the average rate across Russia.


Koleso finished every season with guest performance. Many times the Theater went on tour not only in Russia but even abroad: in Bulgaria, England, Yugoslavia, Hungary, France and the USA. The Theater took part in many theatrical festivals: in Texas (USA), International Festival Chamber Performance «Lambuska» in Petrozavodsk devoted to 175 anniversary of A.N. Ostrovskiy birthday (Moscow), All-Russian theatrical festival «Five Evenings» in memory of Alexander Volodin, Russian theatrical festival Montmartre (France). The Theater regularly conducts the festivals: International theatrical festival on the Volga – every gerade year – Festival Chamber Performance «He and She»; every odd year - «Our Shakespeare».

The Theater has an acting faculty. The number of seats in the Chamber Hall is 120 (rehearsal area).
